Oral Cancer: What You Need to Know & How to Protect Yourself

As a dentist, I often see patients concerned about cavities and gum disease, but very few think about something far more serious—oral cancer. Today, on World Cancer Day, let’s take a moment to talk about this silent threat and how we can prevent it.

What Causes Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer often develops unnoticed, and by the time it’s diagnosed, it can be quite advanced. Some of the most common risk factors include:

  • Tobacco Use – Smoking and chewing tobacco are the leading causes.
  • Alcohol Consumption – Heavy drinking increases risk, especially when combined with smoking.
  • HPV Infection – Certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) are linked to oral cancer.
  • Poor Oral Hygiene – Chronic irritation from poor dental care can play a role.
  • Excessive Sun Exposure – Can cause lip cancer, which is often overlooked.

How Can You Protect Yourself?

Prevention is always better than cure, and when it comes to oral cancer, simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference:

  1. Quit Tobacco & Limit Alcohol – If you smoke or chew tobacco, consider this your sign to stop. Your mouth (and whole body) will thank you.
  2. Eat a Healthy Diet – Fresh fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that help protect cells.
  3. Practice Good Oral Hygiene – Brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits can help catch any early warning signs.
  4. Use Sun Protection – A simple lip balm with SPF can protect your lips from harmful UV rays.
  5. Get Regular Dental Check-ups – As dentists, we are often the first to notice suspicious changes in the mouth. Don’t skip those check-ups!

Know the Warning Signs

Oral cancer often starts subtly. Be on the lookout for:

1. A sore that doesn’t heal after two weeks

2. White or red patches inside the mouth
3. Persistent pain, numbness, or difficulty chewing/swallowing
4. A lump or thickening in the cheek or neck

If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them. Early detection saves lives.

Final Thoughts

Cancer doesn’t discriminate, but awareness and prevention can make all the difference. On this World Cancer Day, take a moment to prioritize your health. Book a dental check-up, encourage your loved ones to quit harmful habits, and most importantly—stay informed.

Your smile is precious. Let’s protect it together.
